Guide to the Interflora World Cup
The Interflora World Cup is the most prestigious international floristry competition, bringing together the world's top floral designers to showcase their creativity, technical expertise, and artistic vision. Established in 1972, the competition has been hosted in various major cities, including Melbourne, Shanghai, Berlin, and Philadelphia. In 2023, Manchester became the first UK city to host this renowned event.
2023 Interflora World Cup Highlights
The 2023 Interflora World Cup took place at Manchester Central from September 7th to 9th, featuring 25 elite florists from around the world. Over three days, these talented artists participated in a series of creative challenges designed to test their skills under intense competition conditions.
For the first time, the event was open to the public, offering visitors workshops, live demonstrations, artisan markets, and entertainment alongside the main competition.
Competition Stages
The competitors faced six distinct challenges, each pushing the boundaries of floral artistry:
A Canopy of the Rainforest – Create a suspended floral arrangement inspired by a forest canopy within two hours.
A Bee-Inspired Tribute – A surprise challenge requiring florists to design a piece honoring bees, using at least 75% natural materials within a honeycomb structure, in 90 minutes.
Watery Wonders – Design a table setting for two with a water-inspired theme, completed in two hours.
A Heavenly Wedding – Create wedding floral arrangements envisioned as if set above the clouds.
Meadow Melody – Another surprise challenge, requiring competitors to craft a hand-tied bouquet capturing the essence of a peaceful meadow in just 45 minutes.
The Grand Finale – A final stage performance, where competitors designed a floral display celebrating Interflora’s 100-year anniversary, incorporating a “100” stand into their work.
Judging Criteria
A panel of 14 international judges and adjudicators, overseen by the International Florist Organisation (Florint), evaluated the competitors based on the following criteria:
Idea – Creativity and originality of the concept.
Color – Harmony and impact of color combinations.
Composition – Balance, proportion, and overall design.
Technique – Precision and execution of floristry skills.
Sustainability – Use of eco-friendly materials and methods.
2023 Interflora World Cup Champion
The winner of the 2023 Interflora World Cup was Nicolaus Peters from Germany. Upon receiving the title, he expressed his gratitude and excitement, stating:
"I can’t believe I’ve won. It’s still sinking in. It’s an incredible achievement, and I’m so proud and overwhelmed."
Looking Ahead
The next Interflora World Cup has not yet been officially announced. Traditionally, the competition occurs every four to five years, so the next edition may take place around 2027 or 2028.
